Thinking about dental implants to restore your smile? Considered the gold standard of tooth replacement, it’s an excellent way to improve your oral health and confidence. But as you begin the process, you might come across some unfamiliar terms during your consultation. Read on for a helpful guide to key dental implant terms so you can feel informed and confident every step of the way!

Implant

A dental implant is a small post, usually made of titanium or zirconia, that is surgically placed into your jawbone. It acts like a natural tooth root, providing a stable base for crowns, bridges, or dentures. Once healed, it becomes a permanent part of your smile.

Osseointegration

This is the process where your implant fuses with your jawbone. It’s what makes implants so secure and long-lasting. Osseointegration typically takes a few months and is essential for the long-term success of the implant.

Abutment

Once the implant has healed and integrated with the bone, an abutment is attached. This is a small connector that holds your new tooth (like a crown or bridge) in place securely.

Crown

A crown is the visible part of your tooth replacement. It’s custom-made to match the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth and is attached to the abutment. Crowns can also be placed over natural teeth, not just implants.

Abutment Teeth

In cases where a bridge or partial denture is used, abutment teeth are the healthy natural teeth that support the prosthetic. They help anchor the bridge or denture and maintain proper bite and appearance.

Endosteal Implant

This is the most common type of dental implant. It’s placed directly into the jawbone and shaped like a small screw, plate, or cylinder. It provides a strong foundation for one or more replacement teeth.

Subperiosteal Implant

Unlike endosteal implants, subperiosteal implants rest on top of the jawbone but under the gum. They are often used when a patient doesn’t have enough healthy jawbone and isn’t a candidate for bone grafting.

Titanium

Titanium is the most widely used material for implants. It’s lightweight, durable, and biocompatible, meaning your body accepts it well with minimal risk of reaction.

Zirconia

Zirconia is a metal-free alternative to titanium implants. It’s a good choice for patients with metal sensitivities and offers a more natural appearance. Zirconia is also known to resist plaque buildup, helping to keep your gums healthier.

Ceramic

Ceramic materials, including zirconia, are often used for implant crowns due to their strength and lifelike appearance. They come in shades that match natural tooth enamel, making your new tooth blend right in.
