Do I Really Need to Fix My Chipped Tooth?
August 22, 2024
When it comes to your adult teeth, you only get one set. That’s why it’s very important to always keep them clean and healthy. Brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and visiting the dentist at least twice a year are all excellent ways to ensure that they stay in good condition, but sometimes even despite your best efforts, accidents can happen.
If you are suffering from a chipped tooth, you may be wondering if you really need to fix it, or if there’s any hope it could heal by itself. Here’s what you can expect if your tooth is damaged, and why it’s important to be seen by an emergency dentist if it is.
Self-Healing Teeth?
When you crack a tooth, you probably immediately want to know if it will heal on its own. The good news is that in some cases, your teeth truly can repair themselves if they have a minor crack. This occurs through a process known as remineralization, which can happen over time. Your dentist can give you a better idea of whether your tooth is likely to heal, however the only true way to tell is with time.
When Should I See My Dentist?
If your tooth is damaged, don’t delay seeing the dentist. While not all chips are severe enough to need repair, your dentist is the best person to make that determination. Just because your tooth looks okay doesn’t mean that it is. Chips and cracks can leave teeth vulnerable to infection and cavities, so sometimes repairing even a tiny flaw can help prevent cavities or a root canal.
In other cases, if a crack is severe enough, you may still need a root canal to restore it, however the sooner you do this, the greater the odds of the tooth healing and not requiring an extraction or a second root canal procedure.
Remember, while it is possible in some cases for your tooth to heal itself, often it is best to have your dentist repair it before further damage occurs. The best way to determine whether your tooth needs restoration is to be seen by your emergency dentist as soon as possible, so don’t delay getting the care you need. It could save your tooth!
