Are Your Dental Insurance Benefits About to Reset? Here’s How to Maximize Them!
October 8, 2020
As the end of the year rapidly approaches, there is no time like the present to maximize your dental insurance benefits. After all, neglecting to do so leads to wasted coverage and unused dollars that could’ve helped your smile and oral health. If you are unsure where to start, here are four tips to assist!
#1. Utilize Your Preventive Care
When it comes to the health of your teeth and gums, prevention is paramount. That is why many dental plans cover the cost of bi-yearly exams and cleanings. However, it is important to know that if you skip one of your appointments, you don’t get an extra one the following year. So, if you haven’t visited your dentist within the past six months (or the whole year for that matter!), then there is no time like the present to schedule your appointment!
#2. Use Your Remaining Annual Maximum to Cover Recommended Treatment
From cavities to gum disease, your dentist can detect several dental concerns during the examination portion of your visit. While your initial reaction may be to postpone treatment until after the New Year, you should first check with your provider if you have met your annual maximum. If you haven’t, then you may be able to utilize the remaining dollar amount to cover a portion of your dental work. After all, the annual maximum resets when your plan does, so it is best to utilize it before that happens!
#3. Don’t Forget About Your FSA Dollars!
A Flexible Spending Account is where an employer sets aside a percentage of an employee’s paycheck for medical-related expenses that arise throughout the year. This savings-like account can be incredibly helpful for covering out-of-pocket expenses, but many patients forget about this health benefit entirely! Since there are typically restrictions that require the funds to be used within a certain timeframe, don’t hesitate to ask the person who handles your benefits about utilizing your FSA dollars for dental care.
#4. Remember, Many Plans Reset in January
While each dental plan is unique, it is important to remember that many renew in January. Therefore, you have until December 31st to attend your second routine dental appointment and meet your annual maximum. Otherwise, another year will end in wasted dollars and unused benefits. So, if you are overdue for your bi-yearly visit or you have been putting off much-needed dental work, call your dentist today!
